Okay. So, for those unaware of context, here is what is going on. In the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act,” which is reprehensible on its surface, there’s a special surprise clause that seeks to limit the definition of rape and incest. In order to qualify for the exception to rape and incest…

The other day I was with the boyfriend (him again!) and friends of his. We were discussing social interaction (in some kind of highly sophisticated mise en abyme). I said one of the things I hate is when you lie about yourself in order to make friends with someone, as in “Oh look there’s a Hello Kitty store! Isn’t that cute?” — only to find out that the person...

F. Scott Fitzgerald used to be my favourite author. I enjoyed The Great Gatsby and was thrilled by Tender is the Night. Most importantly, “Winter Dreams” encapsulated a whole aspect of my life and, I think, changed it. After I learnt about who he was, particularly with his wife Zelda, I oscillated between fascination and utter disgust. I read Zelda’s only novel. I read Alabama...
#386 | Style Icon!
The ubiquitous Paloma Faith. Again!
I do confess to liking her style more than her music. But then, the same goes for The Gaga. And a whole bunch of other performers. Though few of them, in my opinion, qualify as icons as Ms. Faith does.

Last Saturday the boyfriend and I went out to buy stuff for the apartment. Which really made me glad for the rest of the day. As corny as it may seem, I really like living together with someone. Cooking stuff that someone (other than myself) will eat and enjoy. Telling each other about our days. Watching old TV series together. Daily life is much less boring than I expected. A fact that I...

Quite a lot of stuff this week. Which might be explained by the fact that I’ve been on holiday and thus have had time to spend even more time with the beloved laptop than I usually do. Anyway, if you have less time than I do to read all the amazing stuff I’ve read this week, you can jump straight to the last link, because, as I’ve written, it’s an absolute must-read.

Today I donated a substantial amount of money for the first time. I got lots of money from my family for Christmas, which was thoughtless of them considering they need it so much more than I do. But they wouldn’t have taken my refusal anyway, so I accepted the gift. Not only is it great that I gave money to people who will use it much better than I would have — it also means that for...

This one I just can’t stop listening to.
Fuck yeah Julee Cruise.
I used to listen to this all the time back in middle school. The video played a huge part in this. I wanted high school to sound, and look, just like that. Turns out it didn’t, but I still like this song so much.

I’m Facebook friends with the two girls who took over my job as a French assistant in England. Seeing that every time they get back to the UK after holidays makes them sad secretly makes me happy. So not everyone has the time of their life on their assistant year after all. It makes my experience feel all the more special, and precious.

Being middle class is being able to pay for car repairs when they’re needed, is going to the dentist when your teeth hurt, is getting an unusually large electric bill and being annoyed instead of thrown into a panic. Being middle class also involves a more elastic view of ‘necessary’ or ‘vital for survival.’

The next morning Noah began to delegate. He was no longer to be seen checking tarpaulins on the quay, he hired minions for his business, minions for his press releases and an orchestra to take on tour with his forthcoming Glory Crusade. He believed that the personal is political, bought up a national newspaper and began to attach the Nineveh Council for what he called “wanton and ungodly...
#374 | Arbitrary Rubyfruit Jungle Week, Day Five
Reading Rubyfruit Jungle was amazing. I can’t remember where I heard about it, but if I did I’d certainly go back to the person who mentioned it to me to thank them. It’s the best book I’ve read as far as Bildungsroman goes. Actually I feel that it’s the only Bildungsroman I’ve read in which the hero actually learns stuff, and not in the sense that “life...

She then went on to say what a wonderful relationship she had with her husband. They had an understanding about Paul, and wasn’t heterosexuality just grand? “It bores me, Polina.” “Bores you—what do you mean?” “I mean men bore me. If one of them behaves like an adult it’s cause for celebration, and even when they do act human, they still aren’t as good in bed as women.”

“I can’t do that, Dad.” “I know. You’ll pay for it, honey. Tears and bitterness, ‘cause you’ll be out there fighting all by yourself. Most people are cowards, like me. And if you try to get them to fight they’ll turn on you, bad as the people you originally fightin’ with. You’ll be alone.”

All up on Your Thighs: A woman’s worst nightmare?... →
bananapeppers:
A woman’s worst nightmare? That’s pretty easy. Novelist Margaret Atwood writes that when she asked a male friend why men feel threatened by women, he answered, “They are afraid women will laugh at them.” When she asked a group of women why they feel threatened by men, they said, “We’re afraid of being killed.”
