#634 | They Drive By Night

Today I was at someone’s house and the television was playing this film. I didn’t quite follow the story, but Ida Lupino’s costumes were simply amazing. Just sayin’.

#530 | Maggie Smith’s Outfits in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Part II

First part was yesterday.

As I’m writing this post I’m realising how much Maggie Smith’s outfits are part of her character and play their own very important part on screen, where very often her dresses are the only bright spots in the gloomy classrooms.

Here we go for the seventh outfit, a gorgeous silk blouse worn with a beige/brown skirt, and later with a matching cardigan:

The eighth outfit, fiery red:

The ninth outfit might very well be my favourite, with its perfect length, shape and colours, and perfect balance of conservatism and sixties-ness:

The tenth outfit is a flowered bathrobe:

The eleventh outfit, a very conservative one, which she wears when (spoiler alert!!!) she talks about Mary Macgregor’s death:

And the final outfit (which is not the last one on screen, since number nine comes back for the final scene), which makes Maggie Smith look like a flower, or a butterfly, or something, and is my second favourite:

And now, to conclude, look at that gorgeous poster:

#530 | Maggie Smith’s Outfits in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Part I

The film is quite different from the book, but I really enjoyed it. Given the structure of the book, I think it was quite necessary to change a few things, and I enjoyed it as a free interpretation of Muriel Spark’s novel. Anyway, I’m only concerned today about shape and fabric.

I take particular delight in the fact that the film (shot in 1969) is supposed, like the book, to take place in the 1930s, and yet no effort is made to have the title character dressed in a remotely 1930s fashion, or even dressed in a not-conspicuously-1960s fashion. But, ha ha, anyway, I love every single one of Maggie Smith’s outfits in the film. A great lesson of style.

Now let’s look at the first outfit. Notice the thin belt? The sleeves? Oh, those sleeves.

The second outfit is by far the most colourful and dazzling. She’s wearing a suit and a matching cape. Oh my.

The third outfit, which we only see for a few seconds:

The fourth one is the most luridly sixties of them all, with its stripes and dazzling collar:

The fifth one:

The sixth one (notice the length of the dress. I wish I could easily find dresses of that length):

More tomorrow.
